What is it about?

The study evaluated the effect of external magnetic field and magnetic nanoparticles (magnetite) on biogas production from wastewater using biochemical methane potential test. The impact on methane yield and its treatability performance was analyzed.

Why is it important?

The study discovered the effect of magnetic field and magnetic nanoparticles on biogas production. The methane yield was greatly improved which resulted in less carbon dioxide content in the biogas produced. The process performance was also found to improved the treatment of wastewater reducing the COD, turbidity and color content. The loading rate of the nanoparticles was defined and so was the magnetic field exposure time.

Perspectives

From this study, we were able to prove that dosing an anaerobic digestion system with magnetite do have impact on it's performance. It was also found that the biogas yield as well as the methane content in the gas increased with less carbon dioxide content. In all, it was found that both magnetic field induction and magnetic nanoparticle additives had positive influence on the quality of gas produced. This study is in line with the concept of resource (energy) recovery from wastewater. The study aimed to to improve biological systems for wastewater treatment and energy production.
