An Introduction to the University of Liverpool Nuclear Physics Masterclass
Dr Laura Harkness-Brennan introduces the aims and schedule for the University of Liverpool's Nuclear Physics Masterclass.
University of Liverpool Faculty of Science and Engineering

In June 2020, the nuclear physics group at the University of Liverpool launched an online masterclass to educate and inspire young people studying physics in years 11, 12 and 13. Through a blend of online talks from leading academic researchers and industry professionals combined with virtual experiments, young people are able to take a deep dive into the world of nuclear physics.
Highlights of the University of Liverpool Online Nuclear Physics Masterclass include:
Nuclear reactors currently contribute around 20% of electricity generation in the UK. The National Grid’s Future Energy Scenarios predict this will rise to 30% by 2050, as the UK commits to deliver a diverse, low-carbon electricity production portfolio.
Growth of a diverse and highly skilled workforce in the UK nuclear sector is key to securing success, which requires retraining current employees and inspiring a new generation to seek a career in the nuclear industry.
Through the University of Liverpool’s Online Nuclear Physics Masterclass, young people from around the UK and beyond are able to learn more about the physics that underpins the sector and the exciting future careers that are available to them within the nuclear and healthcare industries.
Inspiring school students to take up STEM careers is an important aspect of addressing the growth gap for the nuclear industry. Our Online Nuclear Physics Masterclass is increasing the visibility of nuclear careers through outreach activities with pupils and teachers at a time when schools around the world have had to embrace remote teaching and learning.
