Project

Speech Act in Kodi

Yustinus Ghanggo Ate

What is it about?

This preliminary study investigates the strategies of apology, thanking, condolence, and congratulation used in Kodi, an Austronesian language spoken by 20.000 speakers in Sumba Island, Eastern Indonesia.

Why is it important?

Kodi is an underdocumented language with a small number of speakers, saving this language is much needed for generation to come.

Kodi presents an interesting linguistic case study for research in speech act strategies such as apology given the absence of performative verbs (e.g. pardon, apologise) within its linguistic repertoire.
