GeoHubLiverpool is a wide-ranging outreach and public engagement project that supports teachers and students in schools, colleges, and universities to enrich their attainment, improve their understanding, and increase their awareness of geology and geophysics.
GeoHubLiverpool has a dedicated website which acts as an open educational resource for teachers and students, containing open access teaching materials created in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Ecological Sciences at the University of Liverpool.
For over 30 years, GeoHubLiverpool has brought together geology teachers across the UK and supported them to deliver inspiring A-Level geology lessons. Influenced by the latest research in the field, the annual GeoHubLiverpool CPD course is specifically designed for A-Level geology teachers and aligns with the latest course syllabus and examination specifications.
To raise awareness of the importance of geology and geophysics, GeoHubLiverpool runs a number of outreach and public engagement activities for young people, families and members of the public. In July 2019, the team led and ran the 'Magnetic to The Core' stand at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition in London. GeoHubLiverpool also increased public awareness of geology and geophysics through high profile media coverage from The Guardian, BBC Breakfast, and The Conversation.
Geoscientists play a key role in addressing many of the most critical and pressing global challenges that we currently face as a planet, in areas such as climate change, geohazards, energy, and sustainability. Yet in the UK the numbers of students studying geoscience are in decline and the latest Tier 2 Shortage Occupation List published by the UK government includes many geoscience-related jobs, indicating an increased demand for top-level expertise.
More than 40% of applicants for undergraduate geology degrees study geology at A-Level, making it an important channel to increase interest in the field and explore the wide array of career pathways that are open for geoscience graduates. The high-quality topical content and multidisciplinary approach provided by the A-Level geology curriculum plays a significant role in engaging aspiring future geologists.
Academics in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Ecological at the University of Liverpool are improving the A-Level curriculum, ensuring that geology teachers have the support they need to deliver pioneering geology teaching, and inspiring the next-generation of geoscientists through engaging outreach and public engagement activities.
