Fundamental COVID-19 research

University Medical Centre Groningen

What is it about?

The University Medical Center in Groningen, the Netherlands, is both a hospital, treating COVID-19 patients, and a research center specialized in many areas related to COVID-19. UMCG fundamental researchers are investigating how the body immune system reacts to the infection, how the virus replicates in the body, and what factors induce serious complications.

Why is it important?

The COVID-19 pandemic represents a threat to global health with millions of cases confirmed worldwide, and hundreds of thousands of deaths because of this infection, with numbers still increasing. The ongoing fundamental research projects at the UMCG will eventually contribute to the development of therapies against COVID-19.
