Article Collection: Climate Change and Extreme Events

Annual Reviews

What is it about?

The climate crisis threatens modern society, and action to combat it remains a global priority. Global surface temperatures in 2001-2020 was 0.99°C (33° F) higher than in 1850-1900, contributing to widespread changes in the climate and more frequent weather extremes (Climate Change 2021 Report, recently released by the IPCC).

The report highlights the irreversible consequences of human influence on global ecosystems. According to the report, human influence since the 1950s is a likely driver of more frequent and extreme climate events. Such events have already severely impacted public health, prosperity, and economic stability.

Annual Reviews has curated a new review article collection to explore the causes, impacts, and prediction of climate change and related weather events. In this interdisciplinary collection, our experts discuss the risk factors that influence extreme environmental and ecological change, including:

  • Wildfires and Forest Management
  • Human Impact on Climate and the Anthropocene
  • Extreme Weather Events
  • Climate Modelling and Prediction

Perspectives

It is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land. Widespread and rapid changes in the atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere and biosphere have occurred.
