Advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals: How Springer Nature is making a difference

Springer Nature

What is it about?

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all UN Member States in 2015, sets out a ‘blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet’. At its heart are the Sustainable Development Goals – 17 ambitions for the sustainable future of all. In September 2023, a special SDG Summit will take place at the UN General Assembly to mark the halfway point to the goals, and begin a new phase of accelerated action.

Springer Nature is committed to playing our part to help advance the SDGs. We have already achieved a lot with our efforts in this direction.

We’re part of the SDG Publishers Compact, an agreement by publishers worldwide to work towards delivering the SDGs. We host an annual SDG Impact Festival to raise awareness about the goals among our colleagues, and we have created 17 online hubs to host multidisciplinary peer-reviewed research, commentary and journalism on the SDGs to advance discovery and knowledge exchange.

So, what’s next? We will be marking the halfway point by convening policymakers, early career researchers and industry peers at several events including an evening of science storytelling at the UN Science Summit. Nature Portfolio has also opened a call for papers, on progress towards the goals so far.

We will continue to engage with our partners, publish content relevant to the goals, bring together industries, brands and voices, and ultimately work to become the SDG Publisher of Choice.

Why is it important?

The most significant contribution we can make to achieving the SDGs is through the content that we publish. We disseminate new knowledge on the wide variety of issues represented within the SDGs beyond academic circles and seek to be the publisher of choice for researchers whose work tackles global challenges.

KEY TAKEAWAY: As a global publisher, we aim to connect the researchers who are tackling the world’s toughest challenges with the practitioners in policy and business who desperately need those insights to achieve their goals in improving the world.
