What is it about?

Immune cell and gene expression analyses in islets from adult humans with latent autoimmune diabetes (LADA), type 1 or type 2 diabetes or healthy controls were performed. For comparison the same analyses were performed in the LEW.1AR1-iddm rat model of auto-immune diabetes that develops either type 1 diabetes at an earlier stage, LADA at a later stage or no diabetes at all.

Why is it important?

There are anround 1000 clinical publications on hauman JADA during the last 30 years. Our study is the first one describing the molecular characteristics underlying LADA and in comparison inT1DM. The studies allow the conclusion that LADA is a milder form of autoimmune diabetes in patients of an advanced age.

Perspectives

The detailed insight into the pathomechanisms underlying autoimmune diabetes allows the development of specific treatment schedules for the different forms of the disease as they can be expected to become available in the form of combination therapies with therapeutic antibodies with curative potential in the future.
