What is it about?

This article asks what the community music movement can offer to popular music education in schools. It looks at concepts like participation, cultural relevance and enjoyment as well as creative participation - self expression through music. The article looks at examples of good practice, both inside and outside Wales, as well as missed opportunities we can learn from.

Why is it important?

It is a unique way of looking at the relationship between non-formal musical learning and that which takes place in schools which is formal and based on a curriculum. There is currently a re-evaluation of arts activity in education in Wales, after the Donaldson report of 2015 and during the implementation of lessons learned from Donaldson, so it is timely.

Perspectives

This special edition on Popular Music Education in Wales is important because of the various viewpoints the authors have on issues specific to Wales - issues of creating an accessible, bilingual and open musical culture and of creating pathways to careers, success and self-expression to young artists.
