What is it about?

The article is about Agnes Varda, our memories of place and the creative process. Starting with Varda's exploration of places from her own life in her film The Beaches of Agnes, it goes on to consider the author's own return to her birthplace, the importance of place to the creative process and the artwork itself as a location. It refers to texts by Tim Ingold and Jean Luc Nancy

Why is it important?

At a time when many of our experiences have become virtual the article explores the impact and importance of actual physical encounters with places and with artworks, considering Tim Ingold's notion of a world we can be 'in not on'

Perspectives

Writing this article developed my understanding of an artist, Varda, and writers whose ideas had helped me make sense of my own response to places and artworks, and my creative process. I hope that the reader finds it an enjoyable and interesting piece of writing in itself, as well as perhaps spurring them to visit or revisit Varda's films and to consider the importance of certain locations in their own lives.
