What is it about?

The paper explains Nigerians intriguing penchant for humour even in moments of uncertainty and life tribulations. It shows that despite the global hysteria that trailed the outbreak of the dreaded coronavirus, Nigerians stoically managed their grief through humour.

Why is it important?

The growing predilection for humour production and consumption in Nigeria, which is partly occasioned by the advent of social media and an unprecedented growth of the Night of a Thousand Laughs (a stand-up comedy industry), has not attracted deserved scholarly attention. This paper, therefore, unravels Nigerians predilection for humour.

Perspectives

The article illustrates the psycho-genesis as well as the manifest and latent functions of Nigerians’ humourous response to the coronavirus pandemic.
