What is it about?

This article describes a multi-year process we undertook to draw upon the expertise and knowledge of educators, practitioners, and members of our community to develop a comprehensive set of core knowledge competencies for the profession of drama therapy. It explores why it is important for professions to define unique knowledge competencies as well as explores how these areas of knowledge can be used and developed further in the future.

Why is it important?

Creating core knowledge competencies is crucial to the development of a growing and unique profession. Knowledge competencies are at the heart of educational design and accreditation programs, serve as core domains that will be addressed in standards of ethical practice, and can serve to help educate new professionals (and others) about drama therapy. This document reflects the work of a vibrant and rich community of therapists and educators and can serve as a model for other fields as well.

Perspectives

Working on this project with Laura and Mimi was eye-opening in terms of exploring the complexity and range of knowledge that is expected to be in the command of drama therapists! It was also a gift in terms of creating relationships with other educators and clinicians as we worked to identify and describe the domains of our collective knowledge. I can see already the impact this information will have on our accreditation and licensure processes, and I am proud that the structure allows for these competencies to grow and develop as the profession does in the future.
