What is it about?
Exposure to discrimination is a major socio-environmental concern and increases the risk of developing mental illness. This research studied the interrelationship between discrimination exposure, stress-related brain function, and mental health. Findings suggest discrimination exposure alters brain reactivity to stress, which in turn promotes emotional dysfunction. Thus, stress-related brain activity may represent an important neural mechanism underlying discrimination-related mental health disparities.
