Why is it important?

Burnout has been linked to a variety of consequences, either physical, psychological, or occupational. The assessment of its prevalence and its causes among the workforce is pivotal to prevent its onset. In this study we found that a majority of the Portuguese Public Health Residents were experiencing this syndrome during the fight against COVID-19. Thus, measures should be taken in the future to prevent this from happening again.

Perspectives

This article sheds light on the less than optimal work conditions in which Portuguese Public Health medical personnel, particularly medical residents, had to work in during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since these phenomena are cyclical, measures should be taken to prevent these kinds of extreme scenarios in the future.
