What is it about?

Unit cells in modulated structure are not one and the same. Positions, or occupancies or displacement parameters of atoms are different for different unit cells and vary (modulate) around some average values (basic structure). Such modulations are described by some functions (usually Fourier series) and have there own period, not necessarily commensurate with cell parameters.

Why is it important?

Position for extra oxygen content ( 0.18 ) was exactly established for the first time and its amount corresponds to values determined by chemical analysis. The site responsible for oxygen content variation was established (oxygen in SrO layer).

Perspectives

The result must help to choose the best cation substitution for enhancing superconductiong properties in bismuth cuprates. It was significant professional growth for me and I consider this article as a memory of Prof. Coppens, who helped me a lot to initiate the studies of modulated structures.
