What is it about?

I discuss the problems inherent in the usual motivational/intentional mentalistic approach to social action and propose a discursive alternative through which the meaning of behavior is located in discourse.

Why is it important?

It frees the study of social action from it uncertain psychological foundations. It systematizes insights and concepts from various discourse-centered approaches, particularly ethnomethodology, and provides some justifications and foundations for such approaches.

Perspectives

This book is now more than 30 years old. Although I would do some things differently if I were writing it today, I still think the approach and analysis is correct.
