What is it about?

To create a sustainable digital future, web developers must adopt "sustainable web design" practices. This means designing websites with environmental impact in mind. However, there's a gap between awareness and action among web development stakeholders. To truly make a difference, everyone involved - developers, managers, governments, and customers - must prioritize sustainability in web design. Similar to regulations for web accessibility, there's a chance to establish rules for sustainable web design. Learning from the challenges in web accessibility, we can better understand and overcome obstacles in creating an eco-friendly digital world. This research explores the challenges and barriers web developers face when trying to design sustainable solutions, contributing to the growing field of sustainable web design.

Why is it important?

The Internet is a major contributor to climate change due to the huge amount of energy it consumes and the carbon emissions it generates. Sending emails and streaming videos may seem harmless, but they add up to a significant environmental problem. This matters because, as the Internet continues to grow, its carbon footprint is expected to increase, making it one of the world's biggest polluters. Despite global efforts to reduce emissions, the environmental impact of digital technology has often been overlooked.

Perspectives

Exploring and collaborating with our co-authors in this new and exciting field of web development and design has been a valuable experience that has deepened our appreciation and knowledge. It has allowed us to work towards creating digital solutions that aim to contribute to mitigating the ongoing environmental impact of the Internet. Through this journey, we have gained a fresh perspective that has broadened our understanding of the intricacies of the Internet ecosystem. We genuinely hope that this article can serve as a helpful resource for others looking to understand the importance of integrating sustainability into web design. Additionally, we aspire to inspire fellow researchers and stakeholders to further explore this area through research and contribute to the improvement of the Internet's environmental footprint.
