What is it about?
There is no approach of choice for surgical treatment of children with HCL. Although several surgical treatments are available, open surgery remains the dominant treatment for adults. The number of intraoperative and postoperative complications and fatalities, however, dictates the need for a change in the approach to treating HCL [6].consensus on the surgical treatment of children with hydatid cyst of the liver (HCL). We evaluated the outcomes of laparoscopic and open surgery for childhood HCL. Laparoscopic surgical treatment for children with HCL is safe in compliance with all classic open surgery principles. The laparoscopic technique offered a shorter duration of the surgical effects and markedly fewer postoperative complications. This paper was presented in parts at the joint 17th European Congress of European Paediatric Surgeons’ Association (EUPSA) in Milan (Italia), June 15th–18th, 2016.

Why is it important?
Our experience has shown that the laparoscopic technique is an effective surgical treatment for HCL in children. Compared with open surgery, the duration of the surgical effects decreased and the number of postoperative complications was markedly reduced, from 21.6 to 14.3%.
